What...the hell...is that? The back of the Camry would actually look pretty good, if not for that absurd “vent”. What would that even accomplish if it were real? I literally can’t wrap my head around this thing. It breaks up the lines, it’s impractical, and it’s just generally awful. Here’s another picture, in case you weren’t sad enough yet.
That’s going to bother me every time I see one of these, which is going to be very, very often.

It’s a guide line for when the Camry puts on its mascara. It’s for the “black tears” effect.

They ruined the tail lights on the new LS with this similar tear drop nonsense.
It would look much more sleek if they removed it completely.

Its not a vent, its a structural rib to prevent dents
But for reals? Thats awful. Awfully awful.

If it where real I think it would help cool the brakes and reduce air pressure in the wheel well. Although I’m no engineer/air magician.

In before the fanboys pile on saying it is awesome because it is different and not boring.
Sorry kids, it is still boring, and different for the sake of different is only good for kitsch value.

This I’m more okay with, cause it works with that kink in the fender. But the Camry’s just feels like an after thought.

Extra aero to keep it grounded to the ground.

I bet it’s just glued on, too.
Or worse, it’s part of the taillight assy. and can’t be removed.

This is all aero. Designers keep trying to find new ways to hide aero features on the rear corners to separate the flow cleanly. You’ll see it more often as a ridge in the brake light. It’s ugly, but I bet it’s worth 20 counts of drag. So I guess they’re not necessarily hiding the aero feature in this case, they’re just disguising it as something terrible.

...remember when Japanese cars were clean and sleek and pretty? I’ll bet that’s a really nice car under the awful sheet metal, but I’ll be damned if I could ever buy anything so aggressively ugly.

But do we see any improvement in practice? Because I’m willing to give up 1/12 of an mpg for a car that doesn’t have Playskool bits plastered to the bumpers.

It wasn’t enough for the ambitious juggernaut to produce vile, sleep inducing cars to enrage us - no. It started with just a tease. The “performance” version of the FR-S had like 8 more horsepower. Haha!
Now they’re intentionally pushing car enthusiast’s buttons.
We don’t like fake vents, so they sprinkled a little more. They even colored the front bumper black to make it seem like the grill is larger.

Solid question, and I don’t really know the answer. It’s certainly possible that if this is worth 20 counts or so, it could move the needle by a 1/2 MPG. Or I might be WAY off and it’s only worth 5 or 10 counts, which makes it meaningless. I’d like to think that ‘Yota wouldn’t have put it there if it didn’t do something meaningful, but you never know!

The standard one doesn’t have it, so I’m guessing it’s just some “sporty” applique along with the four (4!) exhaust outlets on the SE.

It’s probably so there is an extra spot to add in some blue LED lighting for tuners, and/or a place for their G tuning to add some extra chrome. UGGHH.

We might be willing to, but with the ever tightening CAFE standards, expect it to become far more common, (assuming the explanation above is accurate, and it sounds reasonable to me) as car companies have to find ways to squeeze every bit of efficiency out while trying to keep the price from sky rocketing.
